I grew up in a summer artist community on the New England coast. All of my parents’ friends were artists and my father worked for the art association. What else could I do but go to art school. My architecture major fell by the wayside as soon as I touched clay in an elective. After graduating from Rhode Island School of Design I went to grad school at Alfred University’s College of Ceramics. I taught at a community college until I moved to Humboldt County in 1973.
Although I occasionally use a potter’s wheel, almost all of my clay work is constructed with slabs of clay that has been rolled flat with a rolling pin. I like to make impressions on the clay while it is soft and plastic and then assemble the pieces after the clay has become ridged.
