Carolyn Jones - Handwoven Fabrics
Arcata Artisan since 2017
A little bit about Carolyn…
I was 12 years old when I first saw a working loom, but I didn’t get my hands on one until 1983, when I came to Humboldt State from southern California and stumbled upon a light and loom filled studio in Gist Hall, now long gone. While completing a degree in philosophy, I took textile and art courses every term, eventually settling upon weaving as my primary medium. I also create artists books incorporating weaving, collage and other objects.
I work on three different floor looms, each warped with different fibers and weave structures so that I can move between different types of cloth at will. Weave structures are designed with both hand drawing and weaving software, but colors are selected as I prepare the warp for the loom. I enjoy combining multiple colors with complex patterns, and the unpredictable and serendipitous results this generates. Though it would be easy to do so, I never weave the same thing twice.
I’d rather weave or make collage books than maintain a website, so my work is not available on line or at any other outlet, other than my home studio. I can be reached at cjweaver@fastmail.com for studio visits.
