Loryn White - Pottery
Arcata Artisan since 2007
Loryn took her first ceramics class in college to satisfy an elective requirement for a science degree but ultimately fell in love with clay. After receiving a B.S. Fisheries degree at Humboldt State, she worked as a biologist for many years before changing paths to pursue her passion of ceramics. She may not work in the fisheries field any more but spending so much time near (and in) our local rivers had a huge impact on her life. Most of her decorating themes center around the water, fish, landscapes and flora and fauna the north coast.
She loves all aspects of creating pottery and ceramic art but lately has focused on surface decoration and expanding her hand-building skills to compliment her wheel-thrown work.
She works in porcelain clay fired to 2200 degrees (cone 6) in an electric kiln out of her tiny home studio in Mckinleyville. She shares her home with her fish biologist/ceramic-cheerleader husband, teenage child, challenging-but-loveable dog, chickens, fish, and way too many house plants. Recently her mother in law has joined the crew.
She enjoys working slowly and purposefully, paying attention to the minute details of each piece while employing the Japanese philosophy of Kaizan; always striving for continuous improvement.
