For the past ten years, Brooke has focused her creative energies on pique assiette (pronounced peek-awe-see-ette): applying shards of pottery and china, onto varied surfaces; from old tin stoves to silver trays, frames, flower pots, and stepping stones.
Each piece reflects years of scavenging for antique and vintage china; that perfect shade, the exquisite border, the perfectly suited tray or vessel that will serve as her canvass. The hunt has taken her from Alaska to New York and to France. Because of the rarity of her materials, each piece is one-of-a-kind, never to be reproduced, not another one in the world.
"I especially love the recycling aspect of my artwork. Nearly all of my materials are chipped, broken, marred, and discarded; destined for the landfill. I do not fix or restore these useless items, but instead, I snatch them up, chip them some more, mix, match, combine, and transform them into one whole new and useful coveted heirloom. Hence, a “pieceful” reminder that there is hope for the hopeless, love for the lost, binding for the broken. Some imperfections remain as proof of saving grace.”
Brooke's work has been well received at art and craft shows both in California and in New York where her pieces have been featured in several antique shops. Brooke’s photo (above) is from a women’s tea. She has been the guest speaker at several women’s functions as she demonstrates her transformation process and draws numerous analogies to how she sees God’s transforming hand in her own life and in the lives of others.
Brooke also does custom and personalized pieces with a name or words to help clients salvage personal memories, using treasured china from their family's past.
