A little bit about Betsy…

In 1967 I had a needle in my 5 year old hand; my superhero cape didn't fit. Soon I had my own tools, Mom was tired of loaning. Dad the bearded peacenik took me to museums.

My skills using a wide range of tools and media, combined with my eclectic upbringing and education in the humanities and my love of the universe enable me to create multi media works of art which have meaning as well as aesthetics, and, often, utility. From jewelry to sculptural light fixtures to votive icons, from silver to copper to wood or paper or fabric, this is a journey from Colorado in 1962 to Humboldt County’s inspiring beauty and its cultural community, of which I am a proud part. All along, I just keep making things, hopefully making things better.

The learning never stops. With every new project, the process is as exciting as the product. I think of each creation as a critter needing a forever home. Adding printing and fabric to my metals and patinas has led me on many exploratory paths. Pieces in metal require extensive planning and preparation as I create dies and tools to form and fabricate them. While working with fabric and paper can be more immediate, I am discovering that all these processes require similar imagination, forethought and good design. Follow me on this journey as I bring forth more critters.
